Up to 2 Million Won Support for Funeral Parlor Fees and More
In recognition of June as Patriots and Veterans Month, Yeongdeungpo District in Seoul is launching a variety of initiatives to honor the noble sacrifices of those who have served the nation and to express gratitude and respect for their dedication.
Last year, Choi Hogwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District Office, is seen bowing his head in silent tribute at the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery. Provided by Yeongdeungpo District Office.
Yeongdeungpo District is the first among Seoul’s autonomous districts to provide up to 2 million won in support for funeral parlor fees at eight locations, including Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital, for registered residents who are eligible for national veterans benefits. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on national merit recipients and their families, and to ensure dignified support through their final journey.
The district also supports young reservists, who are responsible for local security in emergencies, by providing free shuttle buses to the Anyang Bakdal Reserve Training Center. Since November last year, the district has removed restrictions on the number of passengers, allowing any reservist who wishes to use the service to do so free of charge.
Efforts are also being made to ensure the welfare and stability of national merit recipients and their families. Starting this year, the district has increased consolation payments from 25,000 won to 40,000 won, and provides a monthly honorarium of 70,000 won and a condolence payment of 300,000 won upon death. In public facilities with more than 100 parking spaces, priority parking zones for national merit recipients have been established, with 12 spaces currently in operation.
The commemorative event for Patriots and Veterans Month will be held on June 5 at Yeongdeungpo Art Hall. The event will feature a special lecture and a consolation performance on the theme of separated families, as well as local field trips related to the Korean War, North and South Korean separated families, North Korean defectors, and reunification. In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Liberation this year, new commemorative events such as a special history lecture and an exhibition of photographs from the independence movement will also be held.
Choi Hogwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, stated, “We aim to remember the noble spirit of sacrifice of our national heroes and express our gratitude for their dedication to the country,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure that national merit recipients are honored with the respect they deserve.”
