Gyeonggi Province will select five outstanding "Energy Villages."
On June 4, Gyeonggi Province announced its plan to hold the "Resident-Led Energy Village Best Practice Contest" from June 16 to 20, during which it will select a total of five villages, including one grand prize winner and four excellence award winners.
The Energy Village model has drawn attention as a way to reduce energy costs and create various benefits for the local community?such as establishing village welfare funds or revitalizing the community?by installing renewable energy (such as solar power) generation facilities at the village level.
This contest was organized to discover villages that have achieved outstanding results in establishing and operating Energy Villages and in resident-led energy transition activities, and to spread these best practices to other regions within the province.
Eligible participants are villages in Gyeonggi Province that have promoted energy self-sufficiency or opportunity income village projects with provincial support. Specifically, these are villages that have operated renewable energy facilities for more than one year as of June 1, 2024, or villages that, even if they have operated for less than one year, have demonstrated excellent achievements in areas such as resident council activities or fund utilization.
Kim Yeonji, Director of the Energy Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Through this contest, we will identify achievements where residents have led energy self-sufficiency and generated solar income, and we will widely spread these successes throughout Gyeonggi Province."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province has been implementing the "Energy Village Support Project," which provides renewable energy facilities to areas without city gas supply that are vulnerable in terms of energy use. From 2015 to 2024, the province established solar power facilities in a total of 337 villages.
