Public Sentiment Chooses Leadership in Early Election Amid State of Emergency

Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, has effectively secured his victory by leading Kim Moonsoo, the People Power Party candidate, by 6.44 percentage points. With 48.34% of the votes counted, Lee is showing an overwhelming lead.


According to the vote count results announced by the National Election Commission at midnight on June 4, Lee Jaemyung received 8,296,153 votes (49.04%), while Kim Moonsoo garnered 7,206,288 votes (42.60%). Lee Joonseok, the candidate from the Reform New Party, followed with 1,238,496 votes (7.32%), Kwon Youngguk of the Democratic Labor Party received 157,342 votes (0.93%), and independent candidate Song Jin-ho obtained 17,376 votes (0.10%).

By region, Lee Jaemyung led in all areas within the Seoul metropolitan area. In Gyeonggi Province, Lee secured 50.01%, 9.06 percentage points ahead of Kim Moonsoo (40.95%). In Seoul, Lee received 48.35%, 6.98 percentage points higher than Kim Moonsoo (41.37%). In Incheon, Lee recorded 51.06%, leading Kim Moonsoo (40.20%) by 10.86 percentage points.


In the Chungcheong region, Lee Jaemyung also maintained an advantage in all areas. In South Chungcheong, Lee garnered 47.66%, ahead of Kim Moonsoo (44.54%) by 3.12 percentage points. In North Chungcheong, Lee received 48.38%, 4.90 percentage points higher than Kim Moonsoo (43.48%). In Daejeon, Lee achieved 50.91%, significantly outpacing Kim Moonsoo (39.15%) by 11.76 percentage points.


In the Honam region, Lee Jaemyung received overwhelming support, recording high approval rates of 83.83% in North Jeolla, 85.77% in South Jeolla, and 84.61% in Gwangju. In contrast, Kim Moonsoo showed strength in the Yeongnam region, with 66.64% in North Gyeongsang, 72.21% in Daegu, and 52.35% in Busan, securing an overall lead in the Yeongnam area.


In the 21st presidential election held on June 3, the victory of Democratic Party candidate Lee Jaemyung is all but confirmed. As of 11:40 p.m., all three terrestrial broadcasters reported Lee as the "likely winner." In the unprecedented situation of a state of emergency and the subsequent impeachment of former President Yoon Sukyeol, voters in this second-ever early presidential election chose to change the government after three years.


With all three major broadcasters declaring his victory, Lee Jaemyung left his home and stated, "I pay my respects to the great decision of our people." He added, "I will do my utmost to fulfill the great responsibility and mission entrusted to me, so as not to betray the expectations of our people."
