At the "The Gotham 2025 TV Awards" held in New York, USA, on June 2 (local time), Hwang was selected as the recipient of the Creator Tribute award. He stated, "When I first received an award here in 2021, I said, 'All of this was a miracle.' Now, four years later, as I hold this glorious trophy again in this place, I feel that the miracle continues."
The Gotham Awards, held annually since 1991, is an independent film and drama awards ceremony. "Squid Game" won the award for "Breakthrough Series Over 40 Minutes" at the 2021 Gotham Awards. The Creator Tribute award that Hwang received this time is given to creators who have broadened the horizons of television and made a significant impact.
Hwang commented, "The Gotham Awards trophy is not as glamorous or shiny as those from other ceremonies, but is made in a rough form. I believe this means, 'Do not become complacent with your achievements and bear the weight of responsibility that comes with this award.' I will keep the meaning of this trophy close to my heart and move forward."
At the ceremony, he credited Netflix officials, the cast, and his mother, saying, "I would like to thank those who rejected the Squid Game script in 2009. If someone had accepted my script back then, the Squid Game we know today would not exist."
Meanwhile, actor Lee Jungjae also attended the ceremony and served as the presenter for the Creator Tribute award.
"Squid Game" Season 3 is scheduled to be released on June 27.
