This marks the third time a Korean official has been elected as Chair of the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, following Kim Jindong, Counselor at the Permanent Mission in Geneva in 2016, and Choi Seongyo, Counselor in 2020.
The WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures is one of the twelve committees under the Council for Trade in Goods. It is a regular body that oversees the implementation of the WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures by reviewing subsidies and countervailing measures notified by WTO member countries, as well as related domestic legislation.
This agreement is a core agreement that governs countervailing measures, which are among the WTO's key trade remedy measures, alongside anti-dumping duties and safeguard measures.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, "As protectionism is strengthening globally and international discussions surrounding trade remedy measures and subsidies are intensifying, the role of the committee in monitoring compliance with and implementation of the agreement is becoming increasingly important. With the committee's stature rising, Huh Jungsoo's appointment as Chair is expected to provide an opportunity for Korea to contribute more actively to establishing a fair and transparent global trade order."
