A Walkable and POSCO-Themed Street
Anticipating Improvements in Pedestrian Environment, Urban Landscape, and Local Business Vitality
Pohang City is actively pushing forward a project to transform approximately 2 kilometers of Posco Boulevard, stretching from Hyeongsan Rotary to Pohang Cheolgil Forest, into a pedestrian-centered street.
As a core axis of the city center, Posco Boulevard serves as a key street connecting Pohang Cheolgil Forest and the Hyeongsan area, playing a major role as a hub for citizens’ round-trip movement and as a space for relaxation.
However, a number of ongoing issues have been raised, including pedestrian inconvenience caused by illegal parking on sidewalks and aging sidewalk blocks, a lack of distinctive street scenery unique to Posco Boulevard, and impaired visibility due to various obstructions.
In response, since 2022, the city has analyzed cases from other cities, held consultations with relevant departments, organized community briefings, and conducted meetings with the city council to gather a variety of opinions and clarify the direction of the project.
Last year, as a pilot project, the city prioritized improvements over a 500-meter section from Hyeongsan Rotary to Sangdae Nonghyup Intersection, blocking illegal parking and refurbishing aging sidewalk blocks to ensure pedestrian safety and enhance the urban landscape, achieving visible results.
To offer a variety of attractions throughout the four seasons, flowers and trees were planted to create a unique landscape for Posco Boulevard. Above all, the city focused on tailored construction for each commercial area, actively reflecting prior consultations with local merchants, thereby creating a street that benefits not only pedestrians but also the local business community.
Buoyed by strong public support for these achievements, the city plans to sequentially improve the remaining sections, extending past O Square to Cheolgil Forest, with the goal of making Posco Boulevard?a major urban road?a place where anyone would want to walk and spend time.
Through these efforts, the city expects to simultaneously improve pedestrian safety and urban aesthetics, while also revitalizing surrounding businesses and enhancing the city's overall image.
Shin Kangsoo, head of the Green City Project Division, stated, "This project to create a pedestrian-centered street along Posco Boulevard will mark another step forward for Pohang as a pedestrian-friendly city," adding, "We will do our best to create a safe and vibrant urban environment, making this a street built together by citizens and merchants alike."
