According to Seo-gu on June 3, the government has designated June 5 of every year as "Gugak Day," following the date when "Yeominrak," a musical piece composed by King Sejong, was first recorded (the 5th day of the 6th lunar month in 1447).
This performance will feature the "Palgwangmiak" team, consisting of eight members including Kim Younghun, who will reinterpret the beauty of gugak through various genres. The program includes a new arrangement of "Pungnyeonga" inspired by Gyeonggi folk songs, "Nolbuga," which satirizes modern society, "Saetaryeong," which harmonizes piano and daegeum, and "Crater," inspired by the May 18 Democracy Square.
The performance is free of charge, and tickets can be reserved in advance on the Naver "Bitgoeul Gugak Training Center" page. On the day of the performance, tickets can also be purchased on-site at the information desk from 6 p.m. The event will be broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of the Bitgoeul Gugak Training Center.
In the lobby of the performance hall, visitor participation programs will be held, such as a gayageum experience, allowing attendees to directly engage with gugak and feel the charm of K-culture together.
Additionally, on June 7, the "Bitgoeul Gugak Exploration Team," a mystery adventure program linked to the exhibition hall of the Bitgoeul Gugak Training Center, will take place. For more information, inquiries can be made to the Culture and Arts Division of Seo-gu, Gwangju, or the Bitgoeul Gugak Training Center.
Lee Hyunsun, head of the Culture and Arts Division, said, "We expect this performance to shed new light on the social and cultural value of gugak, contribute to the revitalization of local creative gugak, and strengthen the competitiveness of Gwangju-style gugak content. We hope this stage, where tradition and modernity come together, will serve as an opportunity to increase public familiarity with gugak."
