Jeonnam Province will officially begin accepting applications for the Democratization Movement Honorary Allowance this month, in order to honor residents who have dedicated themselves to the restoration and advancement of democracy.
Through the Democratization Movement Honorary Allowance, individuals related to the democratization movement who were previously not eligible for livelihood support will now receive 60,000 won per month regardless of income, allowing for broader recognition of their contributions.
Eligible applicants are individuals related to the democratization movement who are at least 65 years old and reside in Jeonnam as of the application date. The allowance cannot be received in conjunction with livelihood support. There are a total of 433 individuals related to the democratization movement in Jeonnam, of whom approximately 160 are 65 years of age or older.
To apply, individuals must visit their local township or neighborhood administrative welfare center and submit a copy of their identification card and a certificate verifying their status as a democratization movement participant. The allowance will be paid at the end of each month, starting from the month of application.
Shim Jaemyung, Director of the Autonomous Administration Division of Jeonnam Province, stated, "The Democratization Movement Honorary Allowance is a symbol of gratitude and respect for the courage of those who dedicated themselves to democracy and human rights." He added, "Although it is belated, I hope all eligible individuals will apply, as this recognition is truly necessary."
Jeonnam Province also provides livelihood support and funeral expenses for individuals related to the democratization movement. In addition, for recipients of the 5·18 Democratization Merit, the province offers honorary allowances, living support funds, funeral expenses, housekeeping assistance, and transportation call services.
