The police have urgently arrested a man in his 40s in connection with an incident in which three bodies, presumed to be members of the same family, were recovered from a car that plunged into the waters near Jindo Port, Jeollanam-do.
The Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced on June 2 that they had apprehended and were investigating a 49-year-old man, identified as A, on suspicion of causing the deaths of his wife and two sons in a maritime crash.
A is suspected of driving a car into the sea at Jindo Port, Imhoe-myeon, Jindo County, at approximately 1:12 a.m. the previous day, resulting in the deaths of his wife, who was the same age as him, and his two sons, who were high school students.
The car was found at around 8:07 p.m. that day, approximately 30 meters from Jindo Port, and three bodies were discovered inside the vehicle.
Although the identification process for the bodies has not yet been completed, the police believe that the deceased are A's wife and two sons.
The police believe that after driving into the sea, A escaped from the car alone, made his way to land, and fled without making any rescue requests or taking other emergency measures.
A was apprehended by the police at around 9:09 p.m. on a street near Yangdong Market in Seo-gu, Gwangju, approximately 44 hours after the incident.
The police plan to charge A with murder or abetting suicide and will investigate the exact circumstances of the case.
