Environmental Clean-up in Areas Prone to Frequent Flooding

On June 2, Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province announced that from May 26 to May 30, about 200 employees from the Equipment Technology Department of POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks participated in volunteer activities to remove fallen leaves and sediment, focusing on areas prone to frequent flooding in the region, in collaboration with the Gwangyeongdong Office during the "Global Volunteer Week."

Global Volunteer Week is a special week of volunteering organized by POSCO Group since 2010 to put into practice the values of sharing and mutual growth. This year’s campaign theme is “Connecting Hope Through Sharing,” and POSCO employees are carrying out meaningful volunteer activities in their respective regions.

The Equipment Technology Department divided about 200 employees into two groups, morning and afternoon, with 50 to 60 people participating in each session, and conducted large-scale environmental clean-up activities over five days.

The volunteers focused on collecting fallen leaves, soil, sediment, and trash accumulated in drainage channels, along roadsides, and near residential areas in the Gwangyeongdong area, aiming to prevent flooding damage caused by heavy summer rainfall. In particular, they carried out proactive clean-up activities in vulnerable areas, such as low-lying sewer systems and the vicinity of the Gayasan Keungol Mineral Spring, where residents had frequently filed complaints.

Kim Hyungjun, head of the Equipment Technology Department who participated in this activity, said, “I am pleased that we could help prevent flood damage caused by heavy summer rainfall and contribute to ensuring that local residents can enjoy a safe and pleasant summer. We will continue to engage in activities together with the local community in the future.”

Jang Mihyang, head of Gwangyeongdong, said, “Despite the hot weather, I am truly grateful to the employees of POSCO’s Equipment Technology Department for their efforts to ensure the safety and create a pleasant environment for Gwangyeongdong residents. We will continue to work harder to create ‘Gwangyeongdong, a neighborhood that feels good every day,’ together with local businesses.”
