On June 2, Jeollanam-do held an on-site meeting at Yeosu City Hall to discuss the bid to host the 33rd Conference of the Parties (COP33) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the South Coast and South Central region. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure that Yeosu's bid is adopted as a key policy agenda by the new government.

The meeting was attended by Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Chung Kimyung, Mayor of Yeosu, as well as representatives from the East-West Forum, the Yeosu Declaration Implementation Committee, Yeosu YMCA, Yeosu Council for Sustainable Development, and a total of 11 local public and private sector leaders.

The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC is the world's largest international conference on climate change response, attended annually by 198 countries to discuss ways to implement the climate change convention.

The 33rd session in 2028 is scheduled to be held in the Asia-Pacific region. If South Korea expresses its intention to host, the host country will be determined through consultations within the Asia-Pacific group.

Jeollanam-do has consistently appealed to the government and the National Assembly regarding the necessity of hosting COP33 in the South Coast and South Central region. Together with Yeosu City, the province has expanded its bid foundation through a joint hosting model involving 12 cities and counties in the region.

Going forward, Jeollanam-do plans to respond step by step according to a roadmap that includes reflecting the bid in national policy agendas, having the country officially express its intention to host, reaching a decision through internal consultations within the Asia-Pacific group, and finalizing the host city.

Governor Kim stated, "COP33 will be an opportunity for South Korea to declare its climate leadership to the world and serve as a turning point for achieving balanced regional development led by local governments. We will do our utmost to ensure that hosting COP33 in the South Coast and South Central region is adopted as a key policy agenda by the new government."

He added, "Yeosu Industrial Complex must become a high value-added industrial complex. To achieve this, I urge you to actively consider ways to link the ongoing restructuring of Yeosu Industrial Complex, which is currently facing difficulties, with COP33, so that the restructuring can proceed in an environmentally friendly manner."
