On May 31, when the Dragon Boat Festival holiday began, there was a sharp increase in interregional population movement across China. According to the Ministry of Transport of China, the total number of travelers on that day was expected to reach 229.97 million, representing a 13.9% increase compared to the previous day and a 10.2% increase compared to the same period last year.


By mode of transportation, the number of railway passengers reached 17.8 million, up 12.8% from the previous day and 3.2% from the previous year. The number of people traveling by road was 209.22 million, an increase of 14.1% compared to the previous day and 10.9% compared to the previous year.


The volume of passenger transport by waterway was recorded at 1 million, which is a 52.8% increase compared to the previous day and a 26.5% increase compared to the previous year. In contrast, the number of air passengers decreased by 9.8% compared to the previous day, but is expected to reach 1.95 million, which is a 1.76% increase compared to the previous year.


With the arrival of the Dragon Boat Festival, the movement of travelers and people returning home has surged nationwide in China, and congestion at major transportation hubs and tourist destinations is expected to continue for the time being.
