On June 2, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will begin a pilot operation of 'cashless buses' on five routes in four cities within the province starting July 1. The initiative aims to improve the efficiency of city bus fare management, ensure on-time bus dispatch, and prevent safety accidents.

The pilot will cover five routes with low numbers of cash users, such as the elderly or foreign tourists: intercity buses (Siheung) 3302 and 3202, (Suwon) 7002, (Hwaseong) 6012, and (Yangju) 8300.

To prevent confusion among cash users, the province plans to proactively inform the public by posting promotional posters and notices on the vehicles and at bus stops along the relevant routes from early June, as well as through the Gyeonggi Bus app and other channels.

If a passenger loses their transportation card or encounters an error, they can make a bank transfer using a fare payment guide provided on the bus instead of paying in cash. In addition, the province will promote the issuance of cards such as THE Gyeonggi Pass and G-PASS, which offer mobile transportation cards and various benefits, to encourage the use of transportation cards.

Gyeonggi Province plans to closely assess the effectiveness and potential issues of the pilot project during the second half of this year, address any problems, and gradually expand the number of routes included in the program.

Park Noguk, Director of the Transportation Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, said, "This 'cashless bus' pilot project reflects the current trends of decreasing cash usage and the advancement of civic awareness. We will ensure thorough preparation, including sufficient prior publicity and friendly guidance from drivers, in particular making sure that no passengers are refused boarding."
