Police Request Arrest Warrant for Election Official over Proxy Voting Using Husband's Name

On the first day of early voting for the 21st presidential election, police have requested an arrest warrant for an election official who cast a proxy vote using their spouse's name.

On May 31, the Suseo Police Station in Seoul announced that it had applied for an arrest warrant the previous day for election official A on charges of proxy voting in violation of the Public Official Election Act.

A is accused of issuing a ballot using her husband's ID at the Daechi 2-dong early voting station in Gangnam District around noon on May 29 and casting a proxy vote, then voting again about five hours later using her own ID.

The police responded to a report from an observer for independent presidential candidate Hwang Kyoan at 5:11 p.m. on the same day, stating that "there is a voter who voted twice," and immediately arrested A.

It was found that A is a contract public servant affiliated with the Gangnam District Public Health Center and was appointed as an election official in charge of issuing ballots to voters for the presidential election.
