Jeon Doyeon, Sul Kyunggu, and Zo Insung Star in "Possible Love"
Production Shifts Direction, Forfeiting 1.5 Billion KRW Support Fund from the Korean Film Council
Director Changdong Lee's new film, "Possible Love," will be produced as a Netflix original movie.
According to the film industry on May 30, production company Pinehouse Film recently met with Netflix and agreed to move forward with the concrete production of the film. The project was initially planned in partnership with investment and distribution company A, but the direction was changed after differences in detailed negotiations became apparent.
Due to the cancellation of the theatrical release, the production team gave up the 1.5 billion KRW support fund from the Korean Film Council. Although the film was selected as a confirmed recipient in Category C (for productions with a budget of 6 billion KRW or more but less than 8 billion KRW) in the results of the "Mid-Budget Korean Film Production Support" review announced on May 26, the application was voluntarily withdrawn. Under the regulatory framework of the "Act on the Promotion of Motion Pictures and Video Products," online video service (OTT) content is classified as "online video content" rather than "film."
"Possible Love" is Director Lee's first feature film in seven years since "Burning" (2018). Jeon Doyeon, Sul Kyunggu, and Zo Insung are expected to play major roles. The production aims to complete filming within this year, with post-production scheduled to be finished in the first half of next year.
Director Lee is a globally renowned auteur who has created a diverse range of masterpieces. He poses questions about life and the world based on unembellished realism. He sharply captures the facets of Korean society and builds an emotional connection with audiences through pure protagonists who face ruin within these settings.
He made his debut in 1997 with the film "Green Fish" and rose to prominence as a leading director in Chungmuro with "Peppermint Candy" in 2000. In 2002, he won the Best Director Award at the Venice International Film Festival for "Oasis." In 2003, he briefly served as Minister of Culture and Tourism. With "Secret Sunshine" in 2007, he joined the ranks of world-renowned auteurs, and in 2010, he received the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Poetry." In February of this year, he published his first English-language short story collection, "Snowy Day and Other Stories," which garnered international attention.
