June 7-8 in the Original Downtown Area
"Building a Vibrant Cultural City"
Suncheon City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu), announced on May 30 that the Culture Contents Grand Festival will be held for two days, from June 7 to 8, across the original downtown area, including Simin-ro and Nammunteo Square.
This event will transform the entire original downtown into a new cultural plaza by linking various initiatives: the 'Weekend Plaza' project, which is part of the Republic of Korea's cultural city initiative; the content festival 'Wants Suncheon'; and the policy festival 'Algo Issue.'
First, 'Weekend Plaza' is an urban liberation road that converts vehicle roads into cultural spaces filled with content for people to enjoy. It will debut for the first time in the original downtown area this June and is planned to be expanded to other downtown districts throughout the year.
In the Simin-ro area of the original downtown, visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions and activities, including a street karaoke hosted by popular creator Changhyeon, a random dance performance by Dancing Bear, outdoor laser tag, a pop-up store featuring popular characters, a creative market, caricature artists, and media art exhibits.
During the same period, Nammunteo Square will host both the content festival 'Wants Suncheon' and the policy festival 'Algo Issue.' 'Wants Suncheon' will present a vision for establishing a webtoon and animation cluster in the original downtown and will serve as an opportunity to share Suncheon's content industry ecosystem with citizens.
The event will showcase various content, including a pop-up store for the city's representative characters 'Lumi' and 'Ddoongi,' a sing-along show for 'Shinbi Apartment,' a fun walking event with the popular character 'Bellygom,' and a screening of the animation 'Toemarok.'
'Algo Issue' is designed to help citizens easily and enjoyably understand and experience policies closely related to their daily lives. It will provide practical policy information at booths tailored to different groups, such as children and adolescents, young adults, and newlyweds. The themed pavilion will visually present changes in Suncheon's urban status and its future vision.
Along the Okcheon Stream, a photo zone featuring a sculpture of the popular character 'Molang' will be set up, along with an urban camping-style rest area and the Okcheon food stall zone. A delivery zone linked with local alley businesses will also operate to promote regional food and shops.
On Culture Street, the local flea market 'Geumggot Market,' featuring participation from local small business owners and creators, and the 'Youth Arts Festival,' a cultural competition for local youth, will further enhance the festival atmosphere.
For two evenings, the usually quiet downtown will be filled with young people attending the main performances. On June 7, the popular singer Ailee will headline the Wants Show, and on June 8, the popular band Daybreak will lead the Ending Road Show.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu stated, "We will fill the entire original downtown with cultural content and create a vibrant cultural city that attracts young people and businesses alike."
