88 Long-Term Care Workers Participate... "Preventing Elder Abuse Starts with Awareness"
The National Health Insurance Service Busan Northern Branch (headed by Park Jonghyeong) conducted the "2025 Senior Citizens' Human Rights In-Person Training" for 88 employees of long-term care institutions in Buk-gu and Gangseo-gu, Busan. The training sessions were held twice, on May 14 and May 29.
This training focused on raising awareness about the protection of senior citizens' human rights, with both branch employees and long-term care workers participating together. Notably, the program shifted away from internet-based education to more effective in-person sessions led by professional instructors.
Under relevant laws, operators and employees of long-term care institutions are required to complete at least four hours of senior citizens' human rights training every year.
However, with the recent surge in reports of elder abuse and the ongoing trend of population aging, there has been a growing need to address the limitations of existing training methods.
In response, the branch collaborated with Buk-gu Office, Gangseo-gu Office, and the Central and Western Senior Protection Agencies of Busan to design field-oriented training. Through these sessions, participants learned prevention methods and response strategies based on real-life cases.
Park Jonghyeong, head of the branch, stated, "Beyond preventing elder abuse, it is important for the community to act as 'observers.' The National Health Insurance Service will also strengthen support to ensure that welfare services provided in the field are sensitive to human rights."
The National Health Insurance Service is currently prioritizing the establishment of the long-term care insurance system for the elderly, along with strengthening field-oriented human rights education systems.
