The court has sentenced a wife to prison for killing her husband, who was battling cancer.

The court stated, "Although the surviving family members have petitioned for leniency and there are circumstances that can be considered regarding the defendant's motive for the crime, the act of taking a life, even if it is one's spouse, carries grave culpability."

A was indicted for stabbing and killing her husband with a weapon inside a parked car near the Donggwangsan Interchange on the Honam Expressway in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, at around 11:30 a.m. on November 26 last year. A, who was driving the car, attempted to make an extreme choice together with her husband by deliberately crashing into a guardrail before committing the crime, and later attempted self-harm, falling into critical condition.

It was found that A committed the crime on the way home after her husband, a cancer patient, was discharged from a rehabilitation hospital. During the investigation, A testified that she had been suffering from insomnia, depression, and nervous exhaustion, and had intended to end her own life. However, she acted on impulse because she did not want to leave the burden of caregiving to her children.
