"Looking Forward to Cooperation with the New South Korean Government"
A U.S. military official has stated that a "posture adjustment" of U.S. Forces Korea is necessary, with a focus on deterring China in Asia.
A senior official from the U.S. Department of Defense made this remark during a press briefing on board a flight to Singapore on May 29, en route to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue, an Asian security forum. The official said, "Deterrence against China is our top priority," and added, "It is essential to work with the South Korean government to modernize our alliance and to calibrate the posture of U.S. Forces Korea on the Korean Peninsula to reflect the realities of the regional security environment."
The official went on to say, "We look forward to working with the new South Korean government to ensure that the U.S.-ROK alliance maintains strategic sustainability and that our combined posture on the Korean Peninsula contributes to deterrence against both China and North Korea."
