Gyeryong Mayor Lee Eungwoo: "Senior Citizens' Human Rights Define the Dignity of Gyeryong"

On May 29, the city of Gyeryong, South Chungcheong Province, announced that it held an appointment ceremony for "Senior Medical Welfare Facility Human Rights Guardians" in the city hall situation room on May 28, officially launching activities to promote the protection of senior citizens' human rights.

At the event, the city appointed 11 individuals as human rights guardians, including social workers and retired public officials.

The appointed guardians will visit designated senior medical welfare facilities each month to conduct counseling and human rights monitoring for residents and staff. If they discover any cases of human rights violations, they are responsible for making recommendations to the local government or advising the facilities to take corrective action.

The appointment of human rights guardians is part of Mayor Lee Eungwoo's ongoing emphasis on "practical human rights enhancement policies for a dignified old age."

Alongside the operation of the human rights guardians, the city is also strengthening its institutional foundation by providing specialized human rights education for staff at senior medical welfare facilities.

Mayor Lee stated, "In an era of accelerating aging, the human rights of senior citizens are not optional but essential," adding, "Eliminating blind spots in human rights protection and creating a Gyeryong where seniors can live with respect is a key priority for the city administration."

He continued, "We will systematically promote senior welfare policies and human rights enhancement activities to make Gyeryong a city where all citizens can be happy."

Meanwhile, since the launch of the eighth popularly elected administration, the city has been working to improve the quality of life for seniors by pursuing a variety of welfare policies, including revitalizing the senior welfare center, operating a dementia care center, and expanding health management and leisure programs.
