Accidental Machine Gun Discharge Toward North at Western Front GOP, No Unusual Activity Detected

An accidental discharge involving a machine gun occurred at a frontline General Outpost (GOP) unit on the western front, firing toward the North.


According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on May 29, at around 5 p.m. the previous day, a single live round from a K-6 heavy machine gun was fired during a weapons inspection at a GOP unit located in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province.

Upon the incident, the unit immediately broadcast an announcement that an accidental discharge toward the North had occurred. As of now, no unusual movements by North Korean forces have been observed.


The military is currently investigating the detailed circumstances of the incident. A Joint Chiefs of Staff official stated, "The specifics are under investigation," adding, "We will separately review measures to prevent a recurrence of accidental discharge incidents."


This accidental discharge at a frontline Army unit comes about a month after a similar incident on April 23 at a Guard Post (GP) in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, where a soldier accidentally fired a single live round from a K-6 machine gun toward the North during a weapons inspection.
