Gangdong-gu to Create Rest Areas and Exercise Facilities Under Godeokcheon Bridge

14 Billion Won Invested in Godeokcheon Riverside Landscape Hub Project
Pedestrian Environment Improvement and Nighttime Landscape to Be Completed by Year-End

Gangdong-gu in Seoul is moving forward with the “Godeokcheon Riverside Landscape Hub Project,” which aims to transform the area beneath the Godeokcheon Bridge into a bright and safe cultural rest space. The district is targeting completion by December this year.

This project was selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s design landscape project competition, and a total budget of 1.4 billion won (with city and district funds split 50-50) will be invested. New decked rest areas, recreational facilities, and safety installations will be built under the Godeokcheon Bridge, and ground graphic paving will be applied to prevent collisions between cyclists and pedestrians. Nighttime landscape improvements, such as integrated information signage and bridge pillar design painting, will also be carried out along the 3.5-kilometer stretch from Godeokcheon Bridge to Sangil 2 Bridge.

The Godeokcheon Riverside Vitality Hub will be developed as a complex cultural space where anyone in the community can stay, featuring various facilities such as walking paths, exercise equipment, and riverside relaxation areas. Cultural events?including movie screenings using media screens, busking performances, and concerts?as well as programs like ecological experiences and science classes, are also planned.

Gangdong-gu completed the design service and the review by the Seoul Public Design Committee last year, and plans to finish construction and complete the project within this year. Kim Junho, head of Gangdong-gu’s Urban Landscape Division, stated, “We will maximize accessibility along Godeokcheon leading to the Han River, and create a leisurely riverside space where all residents can enjoy nature close to home.”

Meanwhile, the district has been selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s urban landscape competition for five consecutive years since 2020, and continues to promote landscape improvement projects that reflect local characteristics not only in Godeokcheon but also in Gangpul Cartoon Street, Myeongil Square, and other areas.
