On May 28, Park Kangsu, Mayor of Mapo District, attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Hongik University's First Dormitory at 109 Dongmak-ro.
The ceremony, hosted by Hongik University, proceeded in the following order: a progress report on the construction of the First Dormitory, a commemorative address by Hongik University President Park Sangjoo, a congratulatory speech by Mapo District Mayor Park Kangsu, an explanation of the construction outline, and the groundbreaking ritual.
In addition to Mayor Park Kangsu and President Park Sangjoo, the event was attended by Lee Myeonyoung, Chairman of the Board of Hongik Foundation, as well as Hongik University officials and students, and representatives from the construction company, all gathered to celebrate the start of the First Dormitory construction.
On this day, Mayor Park Kangsu stated, "As the saying goes, 'When a university thrives, so does the local community.' The influence of a single university on the community can rival that of a major corporation. I hope that the prestigious Hongik University will continue to coexist with the local community and work together for a better future."
Mapo District plans to develop the public contribution portion of Hongik University's First Dormitory into an open learning space called 'Space,' supporting youth to nurture their dreams and hopes. In collaboration with Hongik University, the district will also operate a variety of programs for local residents, including humanities lectures.
