After Hearing Daejeon City’s Measures

Daejeon City Council Innovation Advisory Committee Discusses Solutions to Citizen Inconvenience from Tram Construction Daejeon City Council held the second meeting of the Innovation Advisory Committee, an advisory body directly under Chairman Jo Wonhui, on the 27th. / City Council

The Daejeon City Council Innovation Advisory Committee discussed solutions to traffic congestion issues on the 27th at the City Council Communication Room, in response to changes in the transportation environment such as the construction of Urban Railway Line 2 (tram).

Committee Chair Jung Kyosoon explained the purpose of the meeting by stating, "It has been 18 years since Urban Railway Line 1 opened in 2007, and with the construction of Line 2 (tram) now officially underway, citizens are expected to experience inconvenience in the transportation sector for the next few years. We need to identify the roles the Daejeon City Council should play in preventing inconveniences for citizens, such as traffic congestion, fine dust, and traffic safety."

The meeting was conducted in a format where the Daejeon City Transportation Policy Division presented 'Measures to Minimize Citizen Inconvenience During Urban Railway Construction,' followed by the collection of opinions from advisory committee members.

The advisory committee members positively evaluated the idea of utilizing the highways surrounding the outskirts of Daejeon as bypass roads. However, they stated that in order for this measure to effectively disperse traffic passing through the city center, it is necessary to implement an incentive system, such as supporting toll costs during commuting hours or expanding the time periods for toll discounts.

Additionally, to reduce traffic congestion in the city center, some members suggested that public institution employees, including the Daejeon mayor and the council chairman, should take the lead in using public transportation. Others emphasized the need for comprehensive public relations efforts so that citizens can be informed in advance about the construction sections and progress of the urban railway and respond accordingly.

Chairman Jo Wonhui stated, "Recently, Daejeon has been ranking first or among the top nationwide in various economic and quality-of-life indicators, such as city brand reputation, resident satisfaction index, and number of marriages, showing a steady upward trend. I will strive even harder to ensure that this momentum continues."
