Approximately 6.23 Million kWh of Electricity Produced Annually with Renewable Energy Facilities... Achieving an 'Energy Self-Sufficient Office Building'
Realizing Carbon Neutrality through Strengthened Eco-Friendly Administration and Energy-Saving Practices
Gwangjin District (headed by District Mayor Kim Kyungho) is accelerating efforts toward energy self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality by introducing renewable energy-based facilities such as solar power, geothermal energy, and ESS (Energy Storage System) in the newly relocated integrated district office building as of April.
The integrated district office is currently equipped with a 165.7kW solar power generation system and a 4,868.7kW geothermal energy facility, enabling the production of a total of 6,236,221kWh of electricity annually. This amount of electricity can supply approximately 1,560 households of four for one year. As a result, the office building now produces a significant portion of the electricity required for its operations on its own, establishing itself as an energy self-sufficient facility.
The ESS (Energy Storage System) installed together with these facilities stores solar and geothermal power generated during the day and allows it to be used efficiently during peak demand hours. This reduces the burden on the power grid and enables sustainable operation of the office building without energy waste.
Additionally, the district has actively utilized digital technologies such as tablet PCs, messengers, and video conferencing to minimize paper printing and strengthen its eco-friendly administrative system. As a result, paper usage last year decreased by 23% compared to 2023. This reduction saved approximately 438,000 sheets of A4 paper, cut the budget by about 4 million won, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 10.7 tons.
This year, the district aims to reduce paper usage by up to 50% compared to 2023, targeting a reduction of 23.5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the district is implementing everyday energy-saving policies such as "turning off office lights during lunch breaks" and "banning the use of disposable cups inside the office building."
Going forward, the district plans to continuously increase the energy self-sufficiency of the office building by utilizing power storage technologies and to establish a leading administrative foundation for responding to the climate crisis.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, stated, "The introduction of renewable energy facilities in the integrated district office marks a meaningful beginning in shifting administrative operations toward sustainability. We will actively incorporate eco-friendly values throughout administration, spread a culture of energy saving, and work together with residents to move toward a carbon-neutral society."
