3rd Presidential Debate for the 21st Presidential Election
Lee Jaemyung Expresses Willingness to Enact Satellite Party Prevention Law if Agreement Reached with People Power Party
Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated that he is willing to create a law to prevent satellite parties if an agreement can be reached with the People Power Party.
At the third presidential debate for the 21st presidential election held on the 27th, candidate Lee responded to Democratic Labor Party candidate Kwon Youngguk's question, "Can you promise to introduce a satellite party prevention law and not form satellite parties?" by saying, "That is a valid point," and expressed his position that "a satellite party prevention law should be enacted."
Candidate Kwon argued, "We introduced a semi-linked proportional representation system, but the two major parties made excuses and created satellite parties, thereby undermining political reform," and insisted, "The recurrence of satellite parties must be prevented."
In response to this question, candidate Lee said, "I truly wanted to do so in the past as well," and explained, "Because it is a political rule, we needed to reach an agreement with the People Power Party, but it was difficult to secure their cooperation."
He further emphasized, "If it becomes possible to negotiate with the People Power Party, I would like to create an effective satellite party prevention law."
