Three Daejeon Universities Advance to Glocal University Finals... Achieve Results Through Tailored, Close-Knit Support Glocal University TF Meeting Scene / Daejeon City

The Daejeon city government announced on May 27 that three local universities?Chungnam National University-Gongju National University (integrated type), Hannam University, and Hanbat National University?have been selected as preliminary designated universities for the Ministry of Education's "2025 Glocal University 30" initiative.

The preliminary designated universities presented differentiated innovation models based on regional specialization strategies and their unique institutional strengths.

Chungnam National University-Gongju National University (integrated type) proposed a vision to realize the first ultra-regional integrated national university model in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam through the "Chungcheong Regional Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Platform." The two universities plan to break down barriers between each institution and undertake a large-scale structural reform that will dismantle boundaries between education, research, and industry.

Hannam University set forth the vision of becoming a "K-Startup Valley University" by combining its startup education capabilities with regional strategies. Through this initiative, the university aims to develop Daejeon Startup Town into the "Hannam Startup Valley," positioning it as a regional growth engine centered on youth entrepreneurship.

Hanbat National University aims to become a talent development hub that will lead the transformation of local industries, focusing on artificial intelligence-based maintenance and repair (AX-MRO) and the defense semiconductor sector.

Since February, the city has established dedicated task forces for each university to provide support, and has continuously operated customized strategic meetings and consulting sessions. In particular, in April, Koh Hyunduk, Director of the Education Policy and Strategy Bureau, met with university officials to check on preparations and actively reflected university requests, demonstrating close administrative support.

For the in-person evaluation phase of the preliminary designation, the Deputy Mayor for Administration and Economic Science and the Director of the Education Policy and Strategy Bureau each attended the evaluation of two universities, emphasizing Daejeon City's strong commitment to support and partnership with the universities.

The universities selected as preliminary designated institutions will submit implementation plans in collaboration with local governments and industries by August, which will serve as the basis for the final designation review.

Koh Hyunduk, Director of the Daejeon Education Policy and Strategy Bureau, stated, "This preliminary designation is the result of submitting a total of six projects (from eight universities) and achieving the designation of three projects (from three universities)," adding, "Daejeon City will mobilize all available resources to support local universities so that it can become a growth platform for the region, and we will spare no effort until the final designation."
