On Lee Jaemyung's Remarks About 'Far-Right Tendencies Among Some Young People'
Ahn: "Clearly Political Violence... Inciting Division"
On May 27, Representative Ahn Cheolsoo, co-chair of the People Power Party’s election campaign committee, once again called on Lee Junseok, the presidential candidate of the Reform Party, to unify their candidacies, urging, "Let’s form a joint government together and set the country on the right path."
Through his Facebook page that day, Representative Ahn stated, "I want to tell candidate Lee Junseok that we must unite our strength to block Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party."
He referenced the historical Battle of Red Cliffs, one of the three great battles of the Three Kingdoms period, in which Liu Bei and Sun Quan joined forces to defeat Cao Cao’s army, saying, "We need that kind of decisive action now," and requested, "I hope candidate Lee Junseok will become the southeast wind of victory."
Regarding former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon’s participation the previous day in a joint campaign event in Nowon, Dobong, and Gangbuk with Kim Moonsu, the People Power Party’s presidential candidate, Ahn expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thank you for joining us, even if belatedly," and emphasized, "Now is truly the time for us to unite as one."
He also raised criticism of candidate Lee Jaemyung’s remarks about the ‘far-right tendencies among some young people.’ Ahn argued, "This is a distorted and inappropriate perception of the younger generation by candidate Lee," and pointed out, "Young people in Korea are not children."
He continued, "They are the ones who ask the most challenging questions and dream of ideal change in society," and criticized, "Branding young people as ‘far-right’ based on their political support is clearly political violence."
Additionally, he insisted, "Political strategies that foster division are calculated actions solely for maintaining the power of one’s own camp," and argued, "An era led by candidate Lee Jaemyung will plunge Korea into even greater confusion through politics of conflict and division."
