Nighttime Spending: 35.2% for Domestic Tourists, 44.2% for International Tourists
Both Domestic and International Tourists Spend More at Night Than During the Day
A recent survey found that domestic tourists in Jeju Island mainly enjoy summer nights at restaurants, while international tourists tend to spend their evenings at casinos.
On May 27, the Jeju Tourism Organization released the '2024 Summer Card Spending and Navigation Data-Based Jeju Nighttime Tourism Pattern Analysis Report.'
This report analyzes the nighttime (6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day) tourism patterns of domestic tourists who visited Jeju in July and August of last year, using Shinhan Card transaction data and T Map navigation data for domestic tourists. According to the report, the total spending by tourists who visited Jeju in July and August last year was 664.8 billion won. Of this, nighttime spending accounted for 251.7 billion won, or 37.9% of the total.
Domestic tourists spent 190 billion won, or 35.2% of their total expenditures, during nighttime hours, while international tourists spent 61.7 billion won, or 44.2% of their total. Notably, the average spending per transaction for both domestic and international tourists was 158,000 won, with nighttime transactions averaging higher amounts than those during the day.
Looking at the main sectors of nighttime spending, domestic tourists spent the most at restaurants, whereas international tourists concentrated their spending on casinos and accommodations.
The report analyzed that one of the reasons for the concentration of international tourist spending at casinos is the lack of late-night businesses near hotels where international tourists mainly stay.
Additionally, an analysis of the nighttime movement patterns of domestic tourists using navigation data showed that most tourists preferred freely accessible places such as beaches. During the early morning hours, there was a tendency to move toward locations such as airports, ports, Hallasan, Seongsan Ilchulbong, and golf courses.
The research team at the Jeju Tourism Organization suggested, "It is necessary to create a nighttime tourism industry ecosystem that can stimulate spending by international tourists," and added, "If targeting domestic tourists, extending business hours to expand the available time for spending should be considered."
