Support for Electricity and Gas Bills and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
In order to prepare for the economic shock resulting from tariff measures imposed by the Trump administration in the United States, the Japanese government has proactively established a government support package totaling 900 billion yen (approximately 860 billion won).
On the 27th, the Yomiuri Shimbun and Tokyo Shimbun reported this news, noting that it is the first time the Japanese government has decided on fiscal spending in response to U.S. tariff measures. When including funds from local governments and private companies, the total scale of the initiative expands to 2.8 trillion yen (approximately 2.69 trillion won).
Of the 900 billion yen in government funds, 600 billion yen (approximately 570 billion won) will be allocated to electricity and gas bill subsidies, while 300 billion yen (approximately 290 billion won) will be used for corporate support. The funding will be sourced from 388.1 billion yen (approximately 370 billion won) in reserve funds and existing budget allocations.
Support for electricity and gas bills will be provided during the summer months of July to September. Ordinary households will receive benefits slightly exceeding 1,000 yen (approximately 9,600 won) per month. The Tokyo Shimbun explained that this measure, part of the Japanese government’s "emergency response package" related to U.S. tariffs, is intended to prepare for economic contraction and a decline in consumption.
Meanwhile, the Japanese government is also considering additional measures and plans to pursue a supplementary budget bill if funding proves insufficient.
