Yangsan City Selected as Outstanding Local Government in 'Public Administration' at Local Government AI Innovation Awards

Achievement of Independently Developing Nine Types of LLM-Based Artificial Intelligence Services for Public Administration

Yangsan City in Gyeongnam Province was selected as an 'Outstanding City/County in the Field of Public Administration' at the 1st Local Government AI Innovation Awards and received the President's Award from the Korea Local Information Research and Development Institute.

The 1st Local Government AI Innovation Awards is an event that shares administrative innovation for enhancing the policies and competitiveness of local governments. It is hosted by Aju Business Daily and supported by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee.

In 2024, Yangsan City was recognized for its presentation of an empirical study on the 'Efficient Utilization of Artificial Intelligence by Local Governments,' its independent development of nine types of AI services for public administration using LLMs (AI models capable of understanding and generating language and text), and its efforts to promote research on generative AI. As a result, Yangsan City was selected as one of the final 12 out of 45 local governments that competed for the 1st Local Government AI Innovation Awards nationwide, achieving the distinction of receiving the President's Award from the Korea Local Information Research and Development Institute in the 'Public Administration' category.

The main contributors to this achievement were 16 working-level public officials from Yangsan City who are interested in generative AI. In February 2024, they established an AI research club, where they actively conduct research on AI fields necessary for administrative work and develop related services, aiming to drive administrative innovation.

Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "This achievement has provided direction on how generative AI can be utilized in public institutions," and added, "We look forward to strengthening Yangsan City's administrative capabilities and improving work performance through the integration of generative AI."
