Lotte Launches Seokchon Lake Water Quality Initiative... 'Aquathlon' Set for July

Maintained for Five Years Since 2021
Seokchon Lake Now Clearer Than 2 Meters Deep

On May 27, it was announced that three Lotte affiliates (Lotte Mulsan, Lotte Holdings, and Lotte World), Songpa District Office, ZENS, and Green Future have signed a business agreement for the "2025 Seokchon Lake Water Quality Improvement" project.

As part of its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, Lotte has been carrying out the Seokchon Lake water quality improvement project since August 2021 to provide citizens with a clean urban oasis.

Under this agreement, Lotte will support the establishment of a fund for the water quality improvement project and provide on-site assistance, while Songpa District Office will offer administrative support. Green Future will be responsible for water quality management and inspection, and ZENS will carry out the water quality improvement work. Purification vessels will operate on Seokchon Lake, conducting purification work twice a week. The process uses photocatalysts, which induce chemical reactions through light, to reduce underwater pollutants.

In 2021, the water visibility at Seokchon Lake was only up to 0.6 meters, but thanks to continuous improvement efforts, it has become clear enough to see more than 2 meters deep. Last year, the lake received a Grade 1 rating in most categories of the water quality environmental standards. This year as well, water quality will be measured and analyzed monthly for ongoing management.

Lotte Mulsan plans to hold the "2025 Lotte Aquathlon" on July 6. Since 2022, Lotte Mulsan has hosted the "Lotte Aquathlon" every summer at the now-clear Seokchon Lake. The Lotte Aquathlon is a biathlon event in which participants swim two laps around Seokchon Lake and then climb the stairs from the first to the 123rd floor of Lotte World Tower. Over the past three years, about 2,000 people have participated, earning Seokchon Lake a reputation among triathletes as a place with excellent water quality.

Jang Jaehun, CEO of Lotte Mulsan, said, "To improve and maintain the water quality of Seokchon Lake, continuous effort is required, not just a one-time initiative," adding, "Lotte will continue to practice ESG management on an ongoing basis."
