Securing Independent Budget, Feasibility Study Launched Last November...
Final Report to Be Officially Submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Upon Completion in June
Dongdaemun District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Pilhyoung) held the final report meeting for the feasibility study on the construction of a new single-track Suin-Bundang Line railway on May 23.
This project is a core strategy for expanding the metropolitan transportation network in the northeastern region and has long been considered a long-awaited initiative for residents commuting from Cheongnyangni to the Gangnam area.
The final report meeting marked a meaningful milestone, as Dongdaemun District's continuous efforts to establish a new single-track Suin-Bundang Line railway have now yielded tangible results. It also served as a major turning point in resolving local railway issues.
The project initially faced significant obstacles, as the feasibility study commissioned by the National Railroad Authority found low economic viability, making progress difficult. Additionally, the request to Korea Railroad Corporation for additional trains was rejected, resulting in multiple challenges.
In response, the district secured its own budget through a supplementary budget in June of the previous year and launched its own feasibility study in November of the same year, paving the way for a new breakthrough.
At this final report meeting, key analyses were presented to enhance economic feasibility, including strategies to minimize conflicts with structures along the railway, as well as measures to reduce both construction and operating costs. Members of the Dongdaemun District Railway Issues Response Committee also attended, contributing to improved communication with residents and strengthening policy expertise.
The district plans to officially submit the results of the study to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport once the study is finalized in June, and will begin full-scale consultations to normalize the project.
Lee Pilhyoung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, stated, "A green light has finally been given to the project to establish a new single-track Suin-Bundang Line railway, which will allow Dongdaemun District to become a transportation hub in the northeastern part of the Seoul metropolitan area. We will continue to meticulously implement follow-up measures to ensure the project proceeds without any setbacks."
