Selected for City-Led 'Solo Together' Contest
Namgu District Launches Specialized Programs for Single-Person Households
Gwangju Namgu District is launching a variety of specialized programs, such as companion dog training and climbing activities, to help single-person households in the area build social networks and strengthen their self-reliance.
According to Gwangju Namgu District on May 26, the district was selected for the 2025 Solo Together Specialized Project for Single-Person Households, organized by Gwangju City. The district will invest 24 million won in project funds by December to implement the "Moillangke" initiative.
The Moillangke project targets single-person households in the district, including young adults, middle-aged, and elderly residents living alone. The project is designed to achieve three main policy objectives: Safe Connection, Care Connection, and Mutual Connection.
The aim is to address a range of issues, including social isolation?a common problem for single-person households at various life stages?as well as care gaps, safety concerns, and housing vulnerabilities.
To this end, Namgu District will collaborate with the Namgu Family Center to offer five experiential programs to members of single-person households in the district, and will also conduct campaign activities for local residents.
The detailed programs provided to single-person households in Namgu include companion dog training practice, climbing experiences, a self-cooking restaurant, home repair and organization education, and health management education. Each program can accommodate 10 participants.
The programs expected to draw the most interest are companion dog training and climbing experiences, both designed to alleviate the sense of isolation among single-person households. The companion dog training sessions will be held once a month until December, and any single-person household resident aged 18 or older can participate. Participants will spend time with their dogs, learn to understand their pets' behavior, and experience making dog leashes, among other activities.
The climbing experience is intended for young and middle-aged adults. Training sessions will take place once a week at the local Red One Climbing Center until September, and in the final month, participants will have the opportunity to climb at the Sangmu Artificial Rock Wall.
Additionally, next month, the district will run the "Ddokttak Talktak" home repair and organization education program to help maintain a pleasant living environment. Between September and November, a self-cooking restaurant will be operated at a cooking academy, giving single-person households the chance to build ongoing relationships while participating in cooking activities together.
A district official stated, "Single-person household residents who wish to participate in the programs can sign up as members on the Namgu Family Center website and submit an application. We will do our best to operate specialized programs to improve the quality of life for single-person households."
