Dong-Eui Institute of Technology Emergency Medical Technology Department Conducts Emergency First Aid Training for Busan Coast Guard

The Department of Emergency Medical Technology at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology (President: Kim Youngdo, Department Chair: Park Youngsoo) conducted marine emergency first aid education and scenario-based field training for staff members of the Gwangan and Dadae Police Substations of the Busan Coast Guard on May 20 and 21. The training was designed to prepare for emergency situations that may occur at sea, such as amputations, drowning, and cardiac arrest.

This training involved third-year students from the Department of Emergency Medical Technology at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology and was carried out as scenario-based drills simulating real-life situations in the waters under the jurisdiction of the Gwangan and Dadae Police Substations of the Busan Coast Guard.

The program was planned to reflect the regional characteristics of the Gwangalli and Dadaepo coastal areas, which attract large numbers of tourists, as well as to strengthen the practical response capabilities of on-site professionals. It was structured as a hands-on program aimed at improving emergency first aid skills specialized for marine accidents.

The program focused on practical training, including ▲safety education such as infection prevention and proper use of PPE, ▲emergency care for trauma patients (bleeding control and bandaging), and ▲response to cardiac arrest (CPR and AED usage). Participating police officers learned systematic response methods for various emergency situations and gained opportunities to enhance their on-site response capabilities and confidence.

In particular, the third-year students participated directly in assisting with the drills and demonstrating emergency first aid, gaining practical experience by applying what they had learned in school to real-life scenarios. This not only helped them internalize the importance and responsibility of on-site response, but also served as a valuable opportunity to strengthen their competencies as future emergency medical professionals.

An official from the Busan Coast Guard stated, "Through this scenario-based training, staff members at the Gwangan and Dadae Police Substations were able to develop the expertise necessary to respond systematically in the event of an actual incident," adding, "A foundation has now been established for rapid and accurate responses to similar marine emergencies in the future."

Professor Park Youngsoo of the Department of Emergency Medical Technology at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology said, "Practical, field-oriented education for marine emergencies that require immediate judgment and intervention is essential," and added, "This program provided an important experience in developing real emergency medical response skills not only for the Coast Guard but also for our students."

This year, all graduates of the Department of Emergency Medical Technology at Dong-Eui Institute of Technology achieved a 100% pass rate on the national examination. The department is strengthening major courses tailored to on-site job requirements with the goal of training emergency medical professionals, and plans to continue expanding practical, field-based emergency medical education in cooperation with related local organizations.
