Galaxy S23 Ultra Survives Five Hours Under Frozen River
Recovered Fully Functional After Submersion
Samsung Electronics Highlights IP68 Water and Dust Resistance
Samsung Electronics' smartphone has become a hot topic for its remarkable durability after it was submerged in a frozen river for five hours and still functioned normally. The smartphone in question is known to be the Galaxy S23 Ultra, released by Samsung Electronics in 2023.
According to Samsung Electronics on May 26, Mikael Krekula, a wilderness tour guide in the Kiruna region of Sweden, recently dropped his smartphone while testing sonar equipment on the Kalix River. Unfortunately, the smartphone slipped right into a hole made for ice fishing in the thickly frozen river.
The smartphone sank to the bottom of the frozen river, about three meters deep. Krekula drilled eight more holes nearby and desperately tried to retrieve the phone using a tool made by tying together birch branches, a shovel, and a plastic bag. After five hours, he finally managed to fish out the smartphone by tying a net to a birch stick. Krekula said, "The moment the smartphone fell in, it felt like a part of my life had disappeared," adding, "It's not just a simple smartphone. It contains everything from photos to credit cards, and all the essentials for my work?it's a companion that's been with me in my daily life."
After retrieving the smartphone, Krekula pressed the power button with trembling hands. At that moment, something amazing happened. The phone powered on immediately, and even displayed a screen showing three missed calls. No drying process or reboot was performed, yet it worked perfectly. For safety, Krekula kept the smartphone in a cabin for a day, and it is reported that it is still functioning normally and in use.
Krekula's smartphone is the Galaxy S23 Ultra model released by Samsung Electronics in 2023. Samsung Electronics shared Krekula's story through its newsroom, stating, "The Galaxy S23 Ultra is designed with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. It can withstand immersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes and protects the device safely from dust, dirt, and sand."
Krekula emphasized that this model reliably supports various functions in the Arctic Circle region of northern Sweden. He said, "When guiding travelers under the aurora or traversing frozen terrain, the stability of the device is extremely important," adding, "The Galaxy S23 Ultra is not only very sturdy, but also has night photography capabilities that can capture unique lights like the aurora." He continued, "Now I always make sure to bring a landing net and hold my smartphone more securely," recalling, "It was an unforgettable experience that proved to me firsthand that the Galaxy S series is much tougher than I expected."
Online users who read the story responded enthusiastically, saying, "Samsung has made a 'zombie phone,'" "It really lives up to the Ultra name," "Durability is what Samsung does best," "No matter how many times you drop a Samsung phone, it never breaks," "I can't believe that's possible," "When it comes to electronics, durability is the most important," "Samsung is a brand you can trust," and "Galaxy is amazing."
