Whether Close or Not, 100,000 Won Is the New Norm... Rising Prices Reflected in Office Workers' Wedding Gifts

Incruit Surveyed 844 Office Workers
Appropriate Wedding Gift Amount Has Increased Compared to Two Years Ago

Recently, as the "wedding cost" has surged, the amount of congratulatory money that guests are expected to give has also increased. While 50,000 won was once considered an appropriate amount for wedding gifts, it has now been found that many office workers believe they should give 100,000 won as a congratulatory gift for a colleague's wedding.

On the 26th, Incruit announced the results of a survey conducted from the 20th to the 22nd, targeting 844 office workers, regarding the appropriate amount of wedding congratulatory money for colleagues this year.

First, respondents were asked, "Assuming you attend the wedding and also have a meal, what is the appropriate amount of congratulatory money (per person) for a colleague's wedding?" The most common answer was 100,000 won, chosen by 61.8% of respondents. This was followed by 50,000 won at 32.8%, less than 50,000 won at 3.2%, and 150,000 won at 1.4%.

For "colleagues who are personally close," 14.3% of respondents answered that 200,000 won was appropriate, followed by 150,000 won at 12.7%, and 50,000 won at 9.4%. For "colleagues connected through collaboration or work," 30% chose 50,000 won, 3.8% chose less than 50,000 won, and 3.3% chose 150,000 won.

In the same survey in 2023, when asked about the appropriate congratulatory amount for "colleagues on the same team but not very close, only meeting for work," 65.1% selected 50,000 won. In this year's survey, the most common response was 100,000 won, which is 50,000 won higher than the previous year. Incruit analyzed that rising prices have influenced the amount of congratulatory money.

Regarding the scope of attending colleagues' weddings, 44.4% said they attend weddings of "colleagues they collaborate or work with." 28.2% answered that they attend weddings of "all colleagues who sent a wedding invitation," while 25.9% said they only attend weddings of "colleagues who are personally close." 1.4% stated that they do not attend colleagues' weddings at all.

Among those who said they do not attend colleagues' weddings, the reasons given (multiple answers allowed) were: not being close enough to attend the wedding (33.3%), personal schedules taking priority (25%), and the financial burden of congratulatory money being too high (16.7%).
