Supporting the Health Rights of the Deaf
From Hypertension Prevention to Cooking Practice...
In Collaboration with the Sign Language Interpretation Center
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Seonghun) announced that it will hold a tailored nutrition special lecture for people with chronic illnesses who are deaf on May 27, in the Nutrition Education Room on the second floor of the Doksan Public Health Center Branch.
The special lecture has been organized to improve access to health information for people with hearing impairments and to provide practical assistance for the prevention of chronic diseases. The program is designed to help participants learn health management methods that can be immediately applied in daily life, by combining nutrition theory education using sign language interpretation and visual materials with hands-on practice in preparing low-sodium menus.
The program consists of two sessions in total, with 20 participants who are deaf and have hypertension. Throughout the entire program, sign language interpretation will be provided in cooperation with the Geumcheon-gu Sign Language Interpretation Center.
The first session was held on May 20, focusing on the practice of low-sodium meals for the prevention and management of hypertension, and included hands-on cooking of burdock japchae and potato cheese hotteok.
The second session will take place on May 27. In addition to hypertension, it will address the importance of balanced nutrition to help prevent and manage chronic diseases in general. In particular, the session will include theoretical education on protein intake, which is often overlooked in daily life, as well as practical cooking of egg tuna rolls and tofu noodle salad.
A district official stated, "Because people with hearing impairments face limitations in accessing audiovisual information, they are often excluded from health-related education. This special lecture was planned to address this reality," and added, "We will focus on enhancing participants' ability to manage their own health through personalized education and counseling."
The district plans to expand the nutrition special lecture in the second half of the year to include people with diabetes and related illnesses who are deaf. In connection with programs at the Doksan Public Health Center Branch, the district will also continue to provide health management services such as metabolic syndrome screenings and rehabilitation programs.
Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, "Deaf individuals have the right to enjoy a healthy life, and practical support is necessary to ensure this," and added, "We will continue to expand tailored health support projects according to different types of disabilities."
