Four Drivers and Passengers Suffer Injuries Requiring 2 to 3 Weeks of Medical Treatment
Caught Driving Heavily Intoxicated Just Two Days Before the Accident
A man in his 60s who caused three accidents while drunk driving over a period of 4 hours and 35 minutes, injuring four people, has been sentenced to a heavy prison term.
On May 24, Chief Judge Jeong Heecheol of the Cheongju District Court Criminal Division 6 announced that he had sentenced a man in his 60s, identified as A, to five years in prison. A was indicted and detained on charges including drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act and hit-and-run resulting in injury under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
A was put on trial for driving a passenger car in a heavily intoxicated state in the Seowon-gu area of Cheongju from 2:00 p.m. to 6:35 p.m. on November 8 last year, causing three collisions with other vehicles and inflicting injuries requiring two to three weeks of medical treatment on four people, including the drivers and passengers of the other vehicles.
Despite causing these accidents, he left the scene without providing any assistance and continued to drive under the influence until he was apprehended by police at around 9:08 p.m. that day.
An investigation revealed that just two days earlier, A had also been caught driving while heavily intoxicated in Cheongju. In September of the previous year, he had caused a drunk driving accident in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and left the scene without taking any action.
