Jeonnam Province announced on May 24 that a consortium including Goheung County, Daesang, and Hana Susan has been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ research and development (R&D) project on land-based gim aquaculture technology, which is being promoted for the first time this year.

To respond to climate change, the province aims to stabilize the supply of gim and ensure food safety by developing land-based aquaculture technology that enables year-round mass production. Over the next five years, 35 billion KRW in national funding will be invested in this effort.

The project consists of two main tasks: developing technology for the year-round supply and mass cultivation of land-based gim seeds, and developing a land-based aquaculture system for year-round gim production as well as quality control technology. The consortium includes Kongju National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Pulmuone, Daesang, Jeonbuk Province (Gunsan City), Goheung County, Hongseong County, and Hana Susan.

Since last year, Jeonnam Province has been building an eco-friendly land-based integrated aquaculture facility for gim and shrimp in collaboration with Goheung County and Hana Susan as part of preliminary research on land-based gim aquaculture. Full-scale aquaculture operations will begin in the second half of this year. In March, Jeonnam Province signed a memorandum of understanding with Goheung County, Daesang, and Hana Susan to participate in the R&D project.

An official from Jeonnam Province stated, “Establishing land-based aquaculture technology is a key task for fostering the K-Gim industry, which is a strategic export product for Jeonnam Province. We will actively support robust research by building an organic cooperative system with participating local governments, research institutions, and private companies.”
