The Democratic Party of Korea stated on May 23 that the recent foreign media reports about the United States considering a reduction of US Forces Korea are "a topic that should be discussed calmly, focusing on the value both sides place on the alliance."
Chief Spokesperson Cho Seungrae met with reporters in Bongha Village, Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, and said, "Both the US side and our Ministry of National Defense have officially announced that no such discussions have taken place."
Chief Spokesperson Cho emphasized, "From the perspective of the South Korea-US alliance, the role of US Forces Korea is clear in terms of deterrence against North Korea and maintaining peace in the Northeast Asia and Pacific region." He added, "There is no significant difference in views between the ruling and opposition parties, nor is there a major gap between South Korea and the United States on this issue."
