A taxi driver in his 50s who gave a female passenger a sleeping pill and sexually assaulted her in Japan has been apprehended. On May 22 (local time), Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested former taxi driver A (male, 54) on charges including sexual assault and illegal filming.

According to the police, in July of last year, A gave a sleeping pill to a female passenger B, who was in her 20s, after she boarded his taxi, and then sexually assaulted her at her home. He even filmed himself sexually assaulting B with his mobile phone.

An investigation revealed that A's mobile phone contained illegal recordings of more than 50 other women, in addition to B. On A's mobile phone, police discovered 3,000 videos and photos of obscene acts involving more than 50 women dating back to 2008. However, A reportedly denied the charges, claiming, "I don't remember."

A had previously been arrested on charges of giving a sleeping pill to a teenage girl and stealing cash and other items from her. At that time, as he was being taken into custody, he showed no remorse, waving his hand at reporters and making a 'V' sign, which sparked public outrage. It was later reported that A was released after receiving a "pending disposition" decision and was not detained.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police are continuing their investigation, believing that A may have committed additional crimes.
