Elon Musk: "The Biggest Product Ever"

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has released a video showcasing the various tasks performed by Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, which is currently under development.

"I Wish I Had One at Home Too"... The 'Robot Housekeeper' That Cooks, Cleans, and Takes Out the Trash Elon Musk's video of the Tesla Optimus robot posted on X. Tesla X.

The video, posted by Tesla and Musk on X (formerly Twitter) on May 21 (local time), shows Optimus opening a trash can lid to throw away a garbage bag, sweeping the floor with a broom, and using a vacuum cleaner. The robot is also seen stirring a pot on a gas stove with a spatula.

Additionally, Optimus uses its fingers to tear off a sheet of kitchen paper, presses the button on a microwave, pulls open a cabinet handle, and draws the curtains?all with natural movements.

Musk captioned the video as "The biggest product ever." Subtitles at the bottom of the video explain, "All of these tasks were performed by a single neural network, which was trained directly from videos showing human actions."

According to the online media outlet Teslarati, Milan Kovac, Tesla's Vice President in charge of Optimus, posted an additional message on X the same day, stating, "One of our goals is for Optimus to learn directly from internet videos showing humans performing tasks." He added, "These videos are often third-person perspective footage, sometimes captured by random cameras."

He continued, "Recently, we have made significant progress in this process, and we can now directly transfer what the robot learns from human videos (currently in first-person perspective) to the robot itself." He added, "Compared to using only teleoperated robot data, this enables the robot to acquire new tasks much more quickly."

This means that Optimus can now learn from first-person perspective videos to mimic human actions, and it is expected that soon, the robot will be able to learn simply by watching random videos available on the internet. As a result, the number of tasks Optimus can learn and perform could increase dramatically in a short period of time.

The timing of Musk's release of this video demonstrating Optimus performing various tasks appears to be a conscious response to China, which is rapidly catching up with the United States in the field of humanoid technology. On April 19, China hosted the world's first humanoid robot half-marathon in Beijing. In August, China is also scheduled to hold the world's first humanoid robot sports competition, featuring events such as floor exercise, soccer, and dance.

Previously, in a May 20 interview with U.S. business cable channel CNBC, Musk stated, "In the long run, the only things that matter are autonomous driving and Optimus, and these will overwhelmingly determine the company's financial success." During Tesla's earnings conference call on April 22, Musk expressed confidence about Optimus, stating, "We will begin producing thousands of units by the end of this year and could reach an annual production of one million units within four years."
