"A Precious Space to Learn Patriotism"
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province announced on May 23 that it has newly constructed a Memorial Tower at City Hall Park in Yeosu-dong, Jungwon-gu (near the Yeosu-Seongnam-daero intersection), and will hold an unveiling ceremony on May 27.

The city relocated the Memorial Tower, which had been located on a hill in Taepyeong 4-dong, Sujeong-gu for 51 years since its construction on June 6, 1974, to City Hall Park due to the aging of the facility and poor accessibility for citizens.
The Memorial Tower at City Hall Park was built at the center of a 1,345-square-meter site, standing 18 meters tall, with a total investment of 1.7 billion won over the past year.
The tower features azalea petal sculptures, representing the official flower of Seongnam, on both sides at the top of the main pillar. These petals support a circular sphere in the shape of a Taegeuk with a diameter of 4.5 meters.
This design symbolizes the spirit of the nation powerfully surging upward like a wave and being completed as a Taegeuk.
On the front of the Memorial Tower, Seongnam City installed bronze sculptures of three land, sea, and air defense spirits waving the national flag, along with an incense burner. The front and back of the main pillar feature identical bronze statues of warriors, faithfully replicating those from the previous Memorial Tower.
On both sides of the Memorial Tower, wave-shaped stone sculptures are installed, engraved with the names of 397 national patriots from Seongnam (Yeonghyeonrok), the purpose of the construction, a dedicatory poem, and a description of the work.
The unveiling ceremony for the Memorial Tower at City Hall Park will be held at 2 p.m. on the same day, attended by Seongnam Mayor Shin Sangjin, members of veterans' organizations, and around 300 citizens.
Mayor Shin Sangjin stated, "The construction of a Memorial Tower within the city hall premises is the first in the nation for Seongnam City," adding, "It will become a precious space to honor the spirits of those who gave their lives for the country and to learn from their patriotism."
