Yongsan-gu to Eliminate Crime Blind Spots by Expanding CCTV... Strengthening AI-Based Safety Network

1,689 AI-Based Intelligent CCTVs to Be Introduced This Year

Yongsan-gu in Seoul is accelerating efforts to strengthen its citywide safety network by newly installing 279 closed-circuit (CC) TVs, focusing on areas vulnerable to crime, sections with high crowd density, and regions with frequent parking congestion.

The district plans to invest a total of 1.61 billion won, including funds from both the city and the district, to install additional CCTVs at 104 locations by October. This includes 94 sites for crime prevention, 3 sites for park security, and 7 sites for monitoring illegal parking.

For this installation, the district prioritized locations in urgent need of crime prevention CCTVs by reflecting opinions from the Yongsan Police Station and local residents, as well as big data analysis from the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The final locations were confirmed after review by the Video Information Processing Device Operation Committee.

In particular, the district will additionally introduce 1,689 AI-based intelligent CCTVs this year, with a budget of 1.4 billion won. These devices are expected to contribute to rapid response and securing the golden time by analyzing and detecting abnormal behaviors such as large crowds, violence, loitering, and people collapsing in real time, and automatically sending alerts to the control center.

The district will also expand the installation of real-time 'crowd detection information displays' to two locations: near Hive in Hangangno-dong and the cafe street in Hannam-dong. Control center staff will be able to monitor crowd flow in real time, which is expected to help prevent safety accidents caused by congestion.

Currently, the Yongsan-gu CCTV Integrated Control Center operates 3,627 CCTVs at 1,076 locations, of which 770 are AI-based intelligent CCTVs. Last year, the center provided 3,953 cases of video information to the police and other agencies, achieved the discovery of 11 crime scenes, and responded quickly to 58 emergency situations triggered by emergency bells, delivering tangible results.

Park Heeyoung, head of Yongsan-gu, stated, "CCTV is a multipurpose safety device that goes beyond simple crime prevention to respond to illegal parking, illegal dumping of garbage, and various disasters. We will continue to expand CCTV installation, focusing on crime-prone areas, locations with frequent incidents and accidents, and high-density crowd areas, to build a dense safety network where all residents can live with peace of mind."
