Summary Order of 5 Million Won Fine for Police Officer
Who Stole Gold Necklace at Incident Scene
A police officer who stole a 37.5-gram gold necklace that had fallen at the scene of an incident has been fined.
On May 22, the Cheongju District Court announced that it had recently issued a summary order imposing a fine of 5 million won on Inspector A, who is affiliated with a local police precinct in Cheongju, for theft charges.
Inspector A is accused of secretly taking a 37.5-gram gold necklace that Mr. B dropped on a street in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju, in the early morning hours of March.
According to the investigation, Inspector A committed the theft after being dispatched to the scene where Mr. B was involved in a physical altercation with an intoxicated individual. When Mr. B's gold necklace came off and fell during the scuffle, Inspector A covered it with a nearby coat and, when no one was watching, put it in his own pocket.
The police confirmed Inspector A's theft through nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage after receiving a report from Mr. B that the gold necklace had disappeared.
Inspector A has since been suspended from duty, and a disciplinary committee will soon be convened to determine further disciplinary action.
