School Support Centers to Become Comprehensive School Support Centers
Kim Daejung, Superintendent: "A Starting Point for Restoring the Essence of Education"
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education is launching a major overhaul of its support system to significantly reduce administrative work in schools, allowing teachers to focus more on classes and educational activities.
On May 22, the office announced that it has developed a "Restructuring of the School Support System" plan, which will take effect from July 1. This reform aims to have local education support offices actively share the administrative workload of schools, enabling schools to shift their focus from administrative tasks to teaching and educational activities.
In particular, the office plans to completely reorganize the existing structure, which has been in place without significant changes since 2019, so that schools can experience tangible reductions in their workload. Based on the results of a "School Administrative Workload Reduction Survey" conducted among school staff in March, the office identified 23 administrative tasks in need of support.
The main tasks include support for school field trips, school informatization work, installation and management of CCTV, safety inspections of children's playground facilities, maintenance of special classrooms, and distribution of textbooks. These are tasks that have traditionally consumed significant time and administrative resources in schools. The office plans to shift responsibility for these tasks to the education support offices.
As a result, the school support functions of each education support office will be further strengthened. The existing "School Support Centers" will be renamed "Comprehensive School Support Centers" and reorganized into a more field-oriented system. In particular, additional support teams will be established at the education support offices in city areas and Muan County, while new comprehensive school support centers will be set up in areas such as Jangheung, Gangjin, and Hampyeong.
Through this reform, the office plans to newly assign a total of 72 staff members to the education support offices to further strengthen their support functions for schools. At the same time, an organizational restructuring at the main office will also take place. Two departments and two teams will be merged or abolished to improve operational efficiency, and the personnel reduced through this process will be reassigned to the education support offices to enhance field support.
Superintendent Kim Daejung emphasized, "This restructuring of the support system is the first achievement in the great transformation of Jeonnam education and marks an important starting point in enabling schools to fully focus on their core educational mission. We will provide strong support so that teachers can devote themselves to teaching and education without administrative burdens."
Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education is also working in cooperation with the provincial council to revise ordinances and amend higher-level laws related to curriculum operation. Through these efforts, the office plans to continuously reflect the voices of the school field and accelerate the creation of a teacher-centered educational environment.
