Creating a Dementia-Friendly Community
Completion of Partner Training Required
Gijang County in Busan (Governor Jung Jongbok) has designated two additional Dementia Overcoming Leading Organizations in an effort to improve dementia awareness and foster a dementia-friendly social culture within the local community.
The newly designated organizations are Caring Daycare Center Busan Gijang Branch and the Gijang Eup Youth Association. With these additions, the total number of Dementia Overcoming Leading Organizations in Gijang County has increased to 19.
A 'Dementia Overcoming Leading Organization' is designated to create a social environment where dementia patients and their families can live with peace of mind. Eligible organizations include corporations, businesses, and institutions whose entire members have completed 'Dementia Partner Training.' The range of eligible organizations is diverse, including companies, public institutions, schools, libraries, groups, and universities.
The selected organizations will carry out roles such as dementia-related volunteer activities, participation in dementia awareness campaigns, providing and displaying informational brochures about dementia, and cooperating with authorities to report and help locate missing elderly individuals.
Gijang County expects these organizations to serve as key hubs in spreading dementia-related information and strengthening the community response system, particularly as part of the reporting network for wandering seniors.
A representative from one of the leading organizations stated, "We will actively cooperate to change perceptions of dementia and help create a local environment where it can be accepted without prejudice."
A Gijang County Public Health Center official commented, "We plan to continue awareness-raising activities to promote mental health and build a dementia-friendly community, with the Dementia Safety Center at the core."
