The Environment and Welfare Committee of Gwangju Metropolitan Council, chaired by Choi Jihyun, visited Kumho Tire Plant 2, which recently suffered a major fire, on the morning of the 21st to inspect the overall environmental impact, including air and water pollution, following the fire.
This site visit was carried out to minimize secondary damage that could affect citizens' health and living environment even after the fire that broke out on the 17th was extinguished. The committee focused on checking changes in air pollution levels before and after the fire, whether hazardous substances had leaked, and the status of water quality monitoring in nearby streams.
In addition, even after the site visit, the committee plans to continue close cooperation with relevant departments to ensure ongoing monitoring and follow-up measures regarding the long-term environmental impact of the fire.
Chairperson Choi Jihyun stated, "A major fire is a serious issue that can threaten not only industrial safety but also the health of citizens and the local environment. Since invisible damage may continue even after the fire is extinguished, we will do our utmost to alleviate public concerns through thorough inspections."
