Kim Moonsoo: "SPC Responsible for Fatal Accident... Imprisonment Won't Prevent Deaths"

Kim Moonsoo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, stated on the 21st regarding the recent fatal accident at the SPC Samlip Siwha plant, "We all know that imprisoning the business owner will not eliminate fatalities."

On this day, after attending a rice planting and snack meeting with young farmers in Goyang, Kim told reporters, "Last time, the chairman of SPC was also arrested, but this is not the only fatality," reiterating his point.

The Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which came into effect in January 2022, stipulates that business owners or management can be punished when serious industrial accidents, such as fatalities, occur.

Kim, who noted, "I am an industrial safety manager," pointed out, "There are many safety devices available, and it is fully possible to install them, so it is very wrong that such accidents continue to happen repeatedly."

He further stated, "The responsibility for not preventing accidents that could have been prevented lies with the CEO, who is the safety manager," and emphasized, "Such cases must be strictly punished." He also added, "Industrial accidents must never happen. It is truly regrettable."

Previously, on the 15th, during a congratulatory speech at a breakfast lecture hosted by the Korea Federation of SMEs in Yeouido, Kim stressed regarding the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, "If I become a decision-maker, I will make sure to revise such a bad law so that it cannot further trouble you."

In response, Lee Jaemyung, the candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized on the 20th, saying, "How can you call it a bad law after signing it in agreement?" and added, "Just because a few business owners think repealing it would be convenient for them and ask for its abolition, does that mean you should take their side?"
